"Apakan daya, tangan terikat ke langit, kaki terpasak di bumi. Jasad tak setanding mimpi..." I have always wanted to write about this film but always... I forgot. Today I recalled this piece of dialogue, thus I decided to start writing. This film was released last year. I watched it once at the cinema and the second time on VCD. This might not enroll me to the fan club automatically, maybe, but the film has left a 'mark' in me. And this rarely happens. The last time, was Titanic, and it was not because the love story, not even because of the so called romantic piece "You jump, I jump" bit, but the fact that the difference between reach and poor are so clearly pointed out in the movie and the love of two old people, hugging together, lying in the bed, knowing they would die. Puteri Gunung Ledang or Princess of Mount Ledang, has many versions. As such, I have no problem with the princess being a Javanese. The older version, the one that I grew up with, the princess was a fairy princess, living atop of Mount Ledang. I also have no problem with Tun Teja, arriving fast and effortlessly to the mountain top whilst the engagement party had a tough time climbing the mountain. Not to mention how Hang Tuah took the whole night to get to the princess at the end of the story. I tried to rationalise. Teja was in fact, expected by the Princess, as such her journey was easy. Whilst the bunch of people carrying trays of gifts are unwelcomed so they were given longer route. And Tuah, because of the Sultan's daulat (power of immunity) he too had a tough time reaching the princess quickly. Gusti Putri Rotno Dumilla and Hang Tuah bitten the forbidden fruit, and fell in love. She was supposed to be married to the Malacca King (Sultan) but she journeyed to Malacca to be with her lover. Hang Tuah was torn between his duty to his King, and his love for the Princess. Conflicts, as you expect, happened. Between the princess and her brother the King of Majapahit, between the him and Hang Tuah. A silent cold war between Hang Tuah and King of Malacca. There are many other plots in the film that should be mentioned. The maid to princess, Raja Demak, the Prime Minister of Malacca (Bendahara), Prime Minister of Majapahit to name a few. But what I want to write is how different this film is from any other Malay movies. The details that was taken into consideration, the props, the dialogues, all are different from what other Malay movies would offer. And I would not be the first to say so. True, there are improvements that could be made to the film, but for this effort, I am truly satisfied. It was the power in the dialogues. The strength in the facial expressions, and this I believe thanks to the theatre background of the actors and actresses. Those are the things that left mark in me. That makes me remember my roots and the power that it held. The Malay soul is alive in the movie. The honour of being a part of this legacy. It made me proud. And I can't begin to explain. The realisation that the Eastern culture is so rich and priceless. And the reason why it should be protected, maintained and shown to the world. I should make a point, that the director, is a Chinese. How... ironic it is that someone from another cultural background can bring out another culture so strongly. Kudos to Saw Teong Hin, the director. Round applause for Mamat Khalid for the memorable lines in the movie. I am hooked with the beauty of the words, spellbound by the underlying meanings. Kisah Cinta Agung or A Majestic Love Story. And it was. Watch the movie and tell me if you do not feel the same. Too many people watch the movie with some kind of expectation it'd be an Oscar nominee. And there is no wonder they were disappointed. Or, more apt, I should say unsatisfied. You should watch it as an evolution of Malaysian film. A several years of growth in Malaysian film induestry. And you'd be surprised you'll see the beauty behind it. If Malaysian directors and script writers can run away from Bollywood's charm or forget to be stereotype or just plain boring, more films like PGL can be made. And I heard, Sepet is one of the few. Maybe I should watch that instead of Constantine? I'm typing off now. Go on and dream magical dreams... ![]()
